School Food and Nutrition Guidelines: Are we meeting the mark?
Dr. Tracy Everitt from StFX will work with the Antigonish Education Centre, School Food and Nutrition Committee to better understand the food policy standards in Nova Scotia schools. They will also survey parents for feedback on school food policies.
The Food and Nutrition Committee is a parent-led group aiming to promote healthier and more sustainable food practices at the Antigonish Education Centre (AEC), a primary school with 660 students. Following revelations of non-compliance with school food policies in Nova Scotian public schools, this organization was founded in the Fall of 2022 to address the issue of outdated guidelines and varied food quality among schools like AEC. By analyzing school menus and surveying parents, this project will assess current food standards and community perceptions. With Nova Scotia facing high levels of food insecurity and childhood obesity, it is crucial to ensure that school-aged children receive nutritious meals to support their learning and development. Through these efforts, the aim is to urge everyone to prioritize children’s health by improving food offerings in schools.
