Land-Based Learning

Prof. Melissa Bishop from CBU will team up with Elaine Denny, Principal of the Immersion School to explore the impacts of land-based learning on students’ oral language production and comprehension competencies during the implemention of an outdoor learning space.

This collaboration between Cape Breton University and the Eskasoni Immersion School will help the school staff to better understand the benefits of implementing an outdoor learning space. Outdoor classroom spaces have been shown to increase community involvement and connection, inform healthy living choices, promote environmental sustainability, and support school cultural programming.

Cape Breton UniversityThis research suggests that there was an increased use of harvesting and outdoor-specific vocabulary, improved comprehension of verbal instructions as well as improvements in oral production competencies when using the outdoor classroom.
