Women’s Centres Connect is the provincial association of Women’s Centres in Nova Scotia, supporting nine centres outside HRM. They work to provide a forum for information exchange, articulate common concerns, enhance visibility, and advocate for women’s issues. Through this research, Connect aims to have a demographic picture of women and girls’ health status in rural Nova Scotia. The project will provide objective insights into the health status in catchment communities to assist in improving existing programs. The outcomes will be shared with other women-serving organizations in Nova Scotia. The pandemic has shifted client needs, increasing demand for services. The project will help address these changing needs effectively.

“I am deeply impressed by the incredible work Women’s Centres Connect is doing. My students and I are honoured to collaborate on this project, which will positively impact the Nova Scotia community, especially those in vulnerable situations. Thanks to CLARI’s generous funding, we’ve been able to launch this initiative. We now have a solid plan to continue and expand the project, further enhancing the Women’s Centres’ ability to provide even more effective services.”

Thanks to this project and funding from CLARI, Women Centres, and other community based organizations in Nova Scotia will be empowered to make program planning and service delivery decisions based on  community level data and information, ensuring programs and services reflect the needs of the community they serve.  Dr. Akiyama and the students working on this project have truly been partners in translating high level data into an accessible and usable portal. It has been great to watch the students take their academic skills and apply them in a community setting.
